The Spanish team has done incredibly well in South Africa this year. Much of that is thanks to star striker David Villa, who has scored 5 of the team's 7 goals.

David Villa was born in Langreo, in northern Spain, on December 3, 1981. The 28 year old currently plays for Barcelona, but has also played for La Liga teams Sporting Gijon, Zaragoza and Valencia since starting his professional career in 1999. He made his move to Barcelona in May 2010.

Acquiring this golden star was no mistake for the city; he is the second best all-time scorer for Spain. (Raul Gonzalez has the record with 44 goals.) Villa has played for his country in the 2006 World Cup, the Euro 2008, and the 2010 World Cup. Villa scored three goals in 2006, four in Euro 2008 and five so far this World Cup. Many say that his ambition and strength have helped lead Spain to the position they are in today; undefeated save two games since November 2006.

And though he is not the top Spanish scorer, he has what may be an even more impressive rank: between 2005 and 2009 he scored the most goals in the world. His 156 goals in four years earned him the IFFHS titles of 4th best scorer in 2009 and top scorer at the international level in 2010.

David Villa fought great odds to end up where he is today. He fractured his femur when playing as a child, and doctors were not sure he would be able to continue playing the sport he loves. Thankfully for Spain, he made a full recovery. Due to the effort to heal put in by David and the support of his father, Jose Manuel, Villa became an ambidextrous player.

David Villa will play in the 2010 World Cup finals with his team against the Netherlands July 11.
